Before the log: 2022 to January 2026¶
The session logs start in March 2026, but Nekotopia doesn't. This is the short version of the four years before that, from a domain registration to a five-hub mesh announcing its own address space.
Written up afterwards
Written in September 2026. This period predates our session logs, so it comes from our own records and is kept deliberately brief. The same timeline is on the funding page.
The timeline¶
| When | What |
|---|---|
| Feb 2022 | nekotopia.io registered |
| 2022–2023 | Infrastructure colocated in Manchester, UK |
| 2024 | Moved to AWS; launched as a hobby network for retro enthusiasts and homelabbers |
| Dec 2024 | First block of our own IPv4 space, which is what makes dedicated public addresses possible |
| Early 2025 | That space brought into AWS; dedicated public IPv4 over NAT goes live |
| Mid 2025 | Multi-region hub design: London and Ohio |
| Late 2025 | Five hubs: London, Ohio, Oregon, Frankfurt, Singapore |
| Jan 2026 | Our own ASN registered; our prefixes announced over BGP |
Where that left us¶
By the end of January 2026 the network worked, but it had grown by accretion. Each hub had been built by hand, a little differently from the last, and the code running the platform had been rewritten more than once. February and March were about fixing that: see Rebuilding on one design.
